Electricity is one of the least understood yet most important aspects of do-it-yourself building and renovation. Used safely, it allows us to enjoy a life of convenience, but when its basic rules are violated it can destroy one's home. A master electrician, building inspector, and licensed general contractor, Cauldwell shows how to properly use electricity in this revision of his 1996 text. Starting with electricity's basics, he then explains tools of all types, shows how and where electricity enters the house, and explains grounding (which is vital for safety). Proceeding through the house, Cauldwell demonstrates how to wire both new construction and renovations and to install receptacles, switches, fixtures, and wired-in appliances. Important safety information is provided, including ground-fault circuit interrupters, lightning, and surge protection. Finally, Cauldwell gives instructions for wiring "Above Code," his system of wiring that exceeds the minimum standards required by the electrical code and results in a safer, higher-quality installation. This title does an outstanding job of explaining an area of perennial confusion for do-it-yourselfers. Recommended for every collection.

From experienced Electrician to Complete Mastery!
By Zen
Teaches you the tools needed, how to use the tools, Safety precautions and techniques, and open-ended projects.
What I mean by open-Ended projects is that the projects and renovations you want are only limited to YOUR creativity. The book teaches you the experiences of an electrician, a general to advanced guideline of what to do, and the rest is how detailed you want your project to be.
Incredible book that covers everything from how electricity works, master-slave control of circuit breakers, code placement of GFCI recpetacles, fishing electrical lines within concrete walls and corners like a professional, to learning about Arc-fault circuit breakers (also known as AFCI Breaker).
I highly recommend this book to people entirely experienced to electricity, as a review manual, and a guideline to planning big projects that you don;t know how to build or even begin! I'm not joking, this book teaches you the experience to master the techniques it takes to be an electrician.
I also own "Black & Decker The Complete Guide to Wiring 5th Edition", and "Home Depot Wiring 1-2-3."
As a comparison:
Home Depot 123 is like a manual for quick easy jobs.
For people who think receptacles shoot lightning and great for beginners as its simple and easy to understand. Basically the Basics but intermediate enough to mess with circuit breakers and not get electrocuted to death by them.
Black & Decker is HARDCORE!
They assume you know what you are doing and you won't electrocute yourself with a metal ladder on of a puddle of water while running HOT electric lines. This book goes straight into advanced wiring designs and circuits for projects, electrical codes you need to know to be up to standards, and installing therm-electric floor-warming systems. It also goes lightly into electric appliance repair such as disassembling a burned out lamp circuitry to integrating a back-up power supply to your house.
Wiring a House For Pros by Pros (The name says it all)
This book teaches you the experience to be an electrician. It emphasizes the difference between an electrician that came fresh out of school and an electrician that has been On-the-job for 30+ years. Words cannot simply describe the ESSENTIAL information in this book. If Black & Decker is hardcore, this book is for Journey Men and Masters of the Trade. However this book does not go in-depth in planning home electrical projects. It makes you a smarter, wiser, and a more experienced electrician.
For a range of Difficulty in understanding/learning how to wire a home:
BEGINNER>>>>>>>>>>INTERMEDIATE>>>>>>>>>>ADVANCED
Home-Depot 123>>>>>Black&Decker>>>>>>>>>>>Wiring a House For Pros By Pros
If you do not know what a wire stripper or wire cutter is or how to use it, I highly suggest the Home Depot 123.
If you know and can differentiate what a 14 gauge, 8 gauge, and a 6 gauge is, I recommend the Black & Decker.
If you know all of the previously mentioned items and need advanced mastery, I suggest Wiring a Home for pros by Pros.

Wiring a House 4th Edition: Completely Revised and Updated
By Daniel
Bought this book to help me with a home rewiring project. It arrived on time and in great condition. My main project required me to run a few new 20 amp lines in my 1957 home which had old 15 amp lines. With the help of this book I was able to understand what was needed to be done and set up a plan to do it. I also bought "Black & Decker The Complete Guide to Wiring, 5th Edition". (see similar review) I estimated how to run wire to receptacles, what kind of wire was needed, how to follow safety rules and wire it to new breakers in my breaker box. After completion, I had run wire under my home to several different rooms, kitchen, garage. I installed 2 Ground Fault Circuit interrupters (GFCI) in the bathrooms and 5 receptacles in the house with 12-2 wire. Then one 12-3 receptacle in the kitchen for the toaster and microwave. (individual circuits) Then ran wire in the garage for my tools and table saw with 12-2 wire and receptacles and hooked up a roof fan to air the garage out when working there. Added 3 new breakers to my breaker box and rearranged the order of some breakers in the box (with the help of a friend who was building a new home). It all cost me in parts about $1300 and 4 months of my time, when I could get to it. I figured I saved several thousand dollars or more. I'm not a master builder or an electrician but reading, studying these books and researching (code, laws), you could do it all yourself. Now I don't have to run outside to trip a breaker any more because the old wiring couldn't support the microwave and TV.

Absolutely Great Book
By Danny V.
I started a remodel job on my second floor of my 1935 Craftsman 1 1/2 story house by adding a dormer which includes a walk in closet from the master bedroom and a very large bathroom. I am no beginner when it comes to construction, but when we opened up the house we found knob and tube wiring. I certainly had very little experience with electrical work. I studied the Black & Decker Complete Wiring and another DYI electrical book. Even after reading these books, I still had many questions. I saw "Wiring a House" and I said why not. I ordered this book and it was absolutely the best decision. This book fills in many gaps where The Black & Decker book failed. Of course both books complimented each other. The best things I liked about this book was the "Above Code" entries. This was great and just what I was looking for. It had great explanations about why things are done and how to do little things that only a professional would know. I did my electrical work and the inspector was impressed at the rough in and final inspection so much so that he said just before leaving that he had to shake my hand. He said that he always cringes when having to inspect work that a homeowner has done that is not a licensed electrician. He said that I had done some of the best work he has ever inspected. Again this was a great book.
