Just part of another book

Yes, this book is just the first pages of "Darkness Visible" by Walter Hannah, literally, even the dots and commas. So, if you want to have both of them just buy the latter. Do not expect to see "secrets" revealed. Darkness Visible is more complete, with some explanations about Freemasonry, but always the author's opinion, mind you. Not a single explanation is given in Masonry Dissected.

A very important book FOR PARENTS.

In my opinion, this book has life-changing information for parents. I am so thrilled to see so many educators all over the world be inspired by RCA. My hope is that parents all over the world will consider this "required reading" for themselves.
Part II of the book is geared specifically toward parents, and it is OUTSTANDING. "Don't be a Helicopter Parent. You can't rescue them forever" speaks to the importance of letting children learn to deal with disappointment, and how to handle the situation. Mr. Clark illustrates these points with a truly amazing story. (Ron, you definitely deserved a Krispy Kreme in front of American Idol after THAT experience. Your patience is really commendable.) The chapter entitled "Remind children of their blessings and stress the value of a strong work ethic" really stood out to me as well. There are so many wonderful, American affluent communities (like the one we live in) and the parents are hard working and well-meaning, but it is so easy to fall into bad habits that can create children with "entitlement issues." As a mother of a 10-year-old boy, the chapter, "Don't get your kids a video game system unless you are prepared to be a prison guard," really hit close to home. We have a game system, and it is a challenge to control his use of it. I gleaned several great ideas from this chapter.
But this is not just "garden variety parenting advice." Mr. Clark explains how these basic childrearing concepts are critical for a student's success in school, and beyond. Mr. Clark is right on - we DO need a full blown education "revolution" in our country. And it will not work unless parents PARTNER with the teachers and the schools. Mr. Clark has done of fine job of providing very specific suggestions on how to implement positive changes in our children's school experience. He does this with compelling real-life stories and shares his personal experiences with kids and their families. He has laid out an excellent "revolution strategy." I hope we all embrace it.

Dedication to Teaching... and Nothing Else

Took me awhile to decide between 2 stars or 3. I got the book because I read a review of it and it seemed interesting. Ron Clark has an amazing amount of energy and dedication, and so too, do the teachers at his school. They are willing to get there early and put in 10-12 hour days to make sure their students learn and do their very best. I'm curious about whether any of them have families, however. I teach my 2nd graders and do my very best and devote time and energy planning lessons and learning new strategies/content, however, I can't stay there all night doing bigger and better because I have 4 children of my own who need me so THEY can be all they can be. My children take up much of my free time with their activities (which is as it should be) which means I don't have free time to go to my students' after school activities. There has to be a balance in life - work, family, fun. Ron Clark and his teachers run an amazing school it seems like, but do they have that balance? How much time do they spend with their own families? How excellent are they for their own children? First and foremost, I'm dedicated to my children and then I'm dedicated to my job. In that order. Does that make me a bad teacher? No. I struggle with teaching "methods" that mean you have to be dedicated to your job only and nothing else.

Ron Clark's newest book is filled with motivational learning expectations and new strategies, along with Mr. Clark's fantastic sense of humor. Mr. Clark's "call for revolution" is truly inspiring. He points out 101 ways we can make education extraordinary. He discusses fearless teaching, fearless learning, which results in fearless living. I was truly inspired by the comments in the book, such as, "Not every child deserves a cookie", and "Teach the parents the correct way to tutor their children". The End of Molasses Classes is a must-have for teachers, students, principals and parents alike. I have purchased several books for my employees! Jeff Anderson, Audio Enhancement.

Great pair of books in an interesting soft plastic case. Gossage has (as usual) some knock out images, this time with gorgeous
color palettes. Soth has a touching folding contribution. The two works together are greater than the individual books. Likely extremely collectible
and great to handle. (Two hardbound books by the way, not softbound as described by Amazon).

I was part of the group that enjoyed John's contribution to the photography workshop held in Auckland with John and Alex, it was a great time and this book captures perfectly the dynamic between these two photographers, and the suburbs they wandered through at the time, two different styles, two different outcomes. Alex has managed to rescue what was a bad day on the shot out with a quirky clever and human response to John's guns blazing result. As John says, they are unlikely to find there way back to this part of the world again so this is it, it's not going to happen again!

The coverage clearly derives from the author's "lessons learned" notes, and they're rich with information. If nothing in this book surprises you, you're probably very experienced with Java.

In addition to this book's tutorial function, Hardcore Java puts forth and defends a number of opinions about the design and style of Java software. About the Author

Robert Simmons, Jr. started programming when floppy disks were reallyfloppy and 64 kilobytes of RAM was considered state of the art. Fromhis early days of programming BASIC and Logo on an Apple IIe, headvanced through Pascal and C to arrive in the object oriented realmof C++. When Java first came out, he knew that the infant languagewould become a serious player amongst corporations; Robert learnedJava and began using it as his primary language for programming in1997. Although Robert is American, he lives and works as a SeniorSoftware Architect in Germany.

Misleading Title

I gave this book 2 stars more for content than for anything else. When I saw 'Hardcore' in the title, I thought the book would have more advanced programming techniques; optimization, advanced use of interfaces, etc.
What I found was a book with information that is mostly either common sense or something that should have been learned in computer science 101. I've been programming in Java for a little over four years and there is nothing new in this book for me.
On the up side, the book read fairly well. If you don't know Java and are fairly new to programming you might find the book helpful. But if you are looking for anything "hardcore", you won't find it here. In my opinion, it should have been named something like "Java, Best Practices" or something similar.

Newer prints of this book are better...

I purchased a copy of this book a couple of months ago and was fortunate to obtain a more recent printing than the earlier reviewers probably had. There were still some errors and typos of various levels of severity, but quite a few fewer than the earlier printings. This, together with the O'Reilly errata page for the book and a small bit of work on my part involving the use of scissors and a glue stick, gave me a book which has become very useful to me at work. Hopefully, even more recent printings will be even better.

These annoyances aside, I am very happy with the book and what I was able to learn from it.

Nice intro to slightly advanced Java...

The title "Hardcore Java" is definitely overkill. A better one may be "Stuff a new Java developer might not know yet".
This book is full is little nuggets of "oh, good idea" and "oh, I never knew that". But don't expect to be a guru after reading it by any means. Lean towards 'Effective Java Programming Language Guide' for a thorough, advanced discussion of the Java language.
For it's price, it's not bad, it seems relatively cheap compared to many books on the subject. It's easily a weekend read as well.

Finally a much needed book for learning cross sectional anatomy that shows MRI imagining side by side with familiar Netter illustrations. The chapter for peritoneal spaces was key to understanding how the spaces communicate. What a great book for everyday clinical reference.

A murder/mystery with a well written plot and a good mix of well developed characters. The story has plenty of action and an unexpected ending. Provided for a quick enjoyable read. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for all 16+ readers.

Island Mystery

The ten of them were on the remote island for a year. Kind of like in Survivor, only real, not a TV show. They had all applied and were chosen to go on this adventure, the end result of which was to be a film of their adventure. None of them was supposed to know each other before the island, except it did not take for long for most of them to figure out they had some sort of connection to others. They just could not figure out all the pieces of the puzzle as to why they were chosen for this strange adventure. This is their story. The story follows the ten through their daily existence on the island: what and how they forage for food and other necessities of life, how they build whatever shelters they have, how they explore the island, and how they interact as a team. The only glitch comes when some of the ten start dying, either because of an accident, murder, or some other nefarious means. How and why the deaths begin and continue is the real mystery of this book. Along with this murder mystery, the book provides a good picture of survival on the island as well as how and what motivates the people who are part of this experiment/adventure. I thought the plot was pretty good. The character development, for the most part, was also quite good, as were the setting and descriptions. The author writes well, so the book moved along quickly and smoothly. It did start out a bit slow, but that was probably because the author had to get everyone on the island and set the stage for what was to come. Once they got “into the groove”, the pace picked up and continued smoothly and easily to the finish, which was a bit surprising. In the last chapter, those left spend time discussing the “adventure”, where the author sheds some light on the hows and whys of the characters and their actions and the plot, all of which filled in a lot for me. I think any fan of reality shows, like Survivor, who enjoys good mysteries will enjoy this one. Also, anyone who enjoys a good mystery that is not too long and which moves along nicely will enjoy it. I received this through the Kindle Scout program to read and review.

I wish I would have had access to this great book as a teen!!

Many teens fear or dread the writing process. This book is for them! Teen romance blossoms as the brainy, confident Kirsten tutors the much less confident Juan. Add a writing contest wager that Juan can't afford to lose, and you have a compelling story line that teens can relate to. Teens will enjoy the ways that Mr. Taylor's spot-on guidance about what makes good writing is masterfully interwoven with the forward motion of the story. The author removes confusion and frustration for young writers with his concise advice, which he always supports with relevant examples. Teens who are good writers as well as teens who haven't yet had a break through will love this book. Topics of discussion include, but aren't limited to: social and political views of our time, how to get and keep a job, the importance of respect, the dangers of teens drinking and driving, and the value of true friendship. I would recommend it to my own students and grandchildren,
