Managing Data Using Excel ... ... is a new book by Mark Gardener, published by Pelagic Publishing.* It is subtitled "Organising, summarising and visualising scientific data". Clearly the book is aimed at scientists, particularly those dealing with the analysis of observational data, but is it of value to a wider audience? Having worked through the book I would say that it is definitely worthwhile for many other groups, including those in engineering and other branches of science and technology, and also those in commercial and marketing work dealing with the analysis of numerical data of any kind. Aspects of the book that I found particularly useful were: * Detailed and clear descriptions of the use of pivot tables in the analysis and summary of numerical data of any kind (an area where I could certainly make more use of the features available in Excel) * Clearly laid out procedures for arranging, checking and exploring data. * Detailed procedures for display of data in a wide variety of graphs. * Detailed step-by step example spreadsheets available from the publisher's web-site. Wonderful Book!

Any book that espouses positivity gets an A+ in my book!

To give you an idea of what you will be getting in this book, there are chapters on "Can't Buy Me Happiness", "You>Happy", "Thoughts of Happiness", "Words of Happiness", "Actions of Happiness", "Habits of Happiness", etc. Get the picture? Each chapter goes into depth about positive changes you can make to be more happy. You will learn to align your thoughts, words and actions so they create the habits, character and destiny of happiness, according to the book description, and that description is entirely right-on.

I really like the advice and instruction this book offers. If you are tired of your negative, unhappy outlook, this book can really be helpful. Highly recommended.

Delightful "Happiness" Book

I've read several books on happiness, and this one is just delightful! Weaving personal stories, international culture, and do-able suggestions together, Will Bowen constructs an upbeat and engaging experience for the reader.

The thing I like best about "Happy This Year" is that the approach is so practical. The book presents down-to-earth, effective ways to (well, let's face it) change one's thinking habits and belief in oneself. Because, basically, that's what it takes to feel lasting happiness.

I did most of the work Bowen suggests, and raised my happiness "set-point" to a level I never knew existed. Even though I recently encountered some difficult life challenges, I've realized that my happiness level returns to its new high set-point as long as I keep practicing what I learned from this book.

A little more specific than your average happiness book

Oh, I've read the "happy" books before, full of lots of positivity and vague advice on improving that most perky of human qualities. Granted, they all have something to offer, especially if one goes in with a willingness to learn.

But "Happy This Year" was one that stood out to me. Was it full of positivity? Yes. But what impressed me was just how specific Bowen was in dispersing his advice. This was more than what happiness is and is not (though that is included). This was full of specific tips and activities to help develop habits conducive to happiness.

So the cherry on top is what so many of the other happiness books have: exuberant writing and feel-good thoughts. All very nice, especially combined with real information. For those who like science, Bowen has included a nice assortment of studies and facts on happiness.

Yes, there are plenty of happiness books out there, but I found this one had a little something extra.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Frederick Nolan, a.k.a. ‘Frederick H. Christian’, was born in Liverpool, England and was educated there and at Aberaeron in Wales. He decided early in life to become a writer, but it was some thirty years before he got around to achieving his ambition. His first book was The Life and Death of John Henry Tunstall, and along the way he became an authority on the history of the American frontier, founder of The English Westerners' Society, and something of a connoisseur of western fiction in the days when it was a flourishing literary genre.

In addition to the Angel westerns, Fred also wrote five entries in the popular ‘Sudden’ series started by Oliver Strange. Among his numerous books is the best-selling The Oshawa Project (published as The Algonquin Project in the US) which was later filmed by MGM as Brass Target, starring Sophia Loren, John Cassavetes, Max von Sydow, George Kennedy, and Robert Vaughn.

A leading authority on the outlaws and gunfighters of the Old West, he has scripted and appeared in many television programs both in England and in the United States, and authored numerous articles in historical and other academic publications. His award-winning books on Southwestern frontier history include The Life and Death of John Henry Tunstall (1965), The Lincoln County War: A Documentary History (a New York Times ‘Book of the Year’ in 1992), Bad Blood: The Life and Times of the Horrell Brothers (1994), The West of Billy the Kid (1998), an annotated edition of Pat Garrett’s Authentic Life of Billy the Kid (2000), and a popular introduction to the history of the frontier, The Wild West: History, Myth and the Making of America, published in 2003.

Pretty heady stuff but interesting. The main character is a little hard to believe but it makes for attention-getting reading. He is kinda like an early time James Bond (without the fancy gadgets).

A Brilliant Textbook That Ought to be More Readily Available!

I had been searching for this particular plasma physics text since taking a Ph.D. course in space plasma physics (with only a few library copies avaialable) in 1985 at the Univ. of Alaska- Fairbanks, because Nicholson's approach is so well adapted to the space physics domain. I finally managed to obtain it on amazon.com. meaning I no longer had to go to assorted libraries - which was good.

I felt it incumbent on myself to write a detailed review of the book, if I ever could get hold of it, and this is what I present here. (Knowing in advance some potential readers may not relish the level of detail, including the mathematical inclusions and hence not find it "useful" to them - which likely means to me they wouldn't have purchased it anyway and probably are better suited to getting a basic text like 'The Fourth State of Matter')

Nicholson begins with a rigorous attending to essential definitions, quantitatively given in Chapter 1. Then in Chapter 2 'Single Particle Motion' he sets into high gear, tackling E X B drifts (p. 17), Grad B drift (p. 20) along with gyro-motion and guiding center approximation (21-22) and curvature drifts (p. 22), then polarization drift and magnetic moments - finishing with the adiabatic invariants, ponderomotive force and diffusion.

The treatment of mirror machines and mirror confinement in the context of magnetic moment and the adiabatic invariants is also particularly applicable to the space physics arena.

For example, In space physics, one uses the sine of *the loss cone angle* to obtain the mirror ratio (where
B(min) , B (max) refer to minimum and maximum magnetic induction respectively). This requires minor adjustments to Nicholson's formalism, leading to:

What the potential reader needs to bear in mind, of course, is that classification of differing fluid regimes is at the heart of most plasma physics and progresses via consideration of different 'moments'.

This is basically the same progression followed in Nicholson, ending up (roughly) at Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in Chapter 8 (with two further chapters on discrete particle effects and weak turbulence theory to clear up finer details, e.g. to do with debye shielding.

To avoid this (E1(w) -> oo) in obtaining what we call the inverse transform, one then performs (as shown below with arrows) an "analytical continuation" process which escapes the singularity and arrives at a rational and reasonable solution.

Further note: When I took the Space Plasma Physics course, I was concurrently taking Mathematical Physics (Ph.D. level) with it. My suggestion is that perhaps students can get more out of Nicholson's text if they take the Mathematical physics as a prerequisite. Especially useful in this case, is greater exposure to the calculus of residues.

Nicholson's book belongs on the shelves of every serious graduate level plasma physics student, or space physics researcher - but as I noted- I just wished it was more widely available!

Finishing School

What I am, is a work in progress, a super huge work in progress. confession time, I can't remember where Bible Verses are, I do remember lots of verses, however, ask me where it is and I couldn't tell ya, except a select few. God is getting to me. He will "finish" what he started with me In His time. The Finishing School helps explain all of that. We have to be able to give everything we are to God while we are studying and learning and then also we have to be willing to put it to practice. I love to read

I wrote this book … or could’ve any way. Okay, maybe I could’ve just written the book summary. You see, I’m a book nerd. I love to read. I love to learn. Yet, I rarely do much with what I’ve learned. I’m a knowledge junkie. I’m a lot like this girl. Yet, I sit here idle and unchanged. God’s been convicting me about this, by the way. Then comes along this book. Now, He’s hitting me with it.

The book covered so many areas that I need to work on. I like that the author suggests that you take plenty of time to work through it, so that you can put it into action. I had to do a quick read for the purpose of writing a timely review. I definitely learned a lot while reading it and am already working my way back through it s-l-o-w-l-y to put it into action and listen a little more closely to what God is telling me through Scripture and this book.

As I read through it the first time, I found myself and areas I’m lacking in all through the book. Over twenty areas are covered including:

prayer and Bible study | goals | distractions | self-control | habits | boundaries | balance | minimalism | friendship | hospitality | waiting | joy | contentment | influence | forgiveness | awareness | peace | comparison | health | rest

What really called out to me and I even wrote it down was her comment on distractions:

“Our distractions don’t just keep us form a productive day. They can also hinder us from something the Lord is calling us to do… How many of us are “too busy”? … If we cut out a few of our silly distractions, we’d no doubt have the time.” – page 41

Do I even need to confess the word Facebook?

Again, I was nudged when I read about boundaries and how I need to stop “being a victim” and “falsely blaming people and circumstances” because I myself am lacking boundaries.

Homework in the form of printable worksheets is provided for each chapter (or area). This book nerd loves homework, so I can’t wait to work through each one. Then she wraps it up with the importance of margin to have the time and room for growth and change. Finally, she closes with the importance of graduating this “finishing school” so that God can have the glory.

The book is full of ways to move forward in these areas. It’s not just a finger pointed at you or me. It’s Valerie’s own story and how she’s now living what she’s learned. We should do the same.

Practical guides for intentional living

This book is a great guide for any woman - young or old - who wants to start living intentionally. Author Valerie Woerner caught my attention as early as page 3, when she said: "Our lives should be radically different because of Christ who lives in us. Too often they don't look different. And that's not God's fault. That's our laziness." Oh man. That's some good stuff right there!

Valerie freely admits that she's on this journey to intentional living just as much as the rest of us. She doesn't have it all figured out. She's willing to share what she's learning, both the successes and the failures, if it means that others can join in and see God do wonderful things in our ordinary, everyday lives.

This slim volume is packed with 22 areas in which we can let God work in us. Each chapter can be read in about 15 minutes, and I'd highly recommend either printing out the worksheet pages that go with each one, which the author makes available for free on her website, or buy the workbook which has the worksheets all ready to go for you. Due to the time constraints of reading this book before my spot on the tour came around, I was only able to look at a few of the worksheets, but sometime I'd like to go back and work through them all. I believe they would help these truths sink in and make them personal for the reader.

It would be hard to pick a favorite chapter because there were so many good ones! The one that was most personally challenging to me was on the topic of Awareness. I already work in the ministry as a teacher at a Christian school, help raise my siblings, am active at church, have deep meaningful friendships, and work hard to take care of myself physically - it's really easy to just want to stay in my lane and not practice awareness on what is going on in the world. May God give me wisdom on how to use this character quality in my life!

I could see this book having the impact on young women which Elizabeth George's books have had on me. This would be a great graduation gift or would work well for a young women's Bible study group. If you desire to live fully, this could be a great resource for you. Don't let it stay as a desire. "Truly, what we do in the difficult moments is what separates dreamers and doers. The people who live a beautiful, intentional life didn't just have it easy. They made choices when it was hard, and it built their character and refined them." (page 59) Let's make that a true statement about us as well.
