Respectable read.

The book reads like an literary version of a documentary. You can almost see the images of what the reporter is conveying on the written page. As if the pages are a camera, and we're the audience looking at some rough 16mm footage of Dino, Jessica, Jeff, Paul and the rest of the cast and crew of this interesting reincarnation of the 1933 classic "King Kong".
The book follows cast and crew from location to location to studio and back to location again, peering and gawking at the antics of Hawaiian natives and pushy New Yorkers who intermingle and sometimes harrass, beat, steal from, and otherwise contribute directly and indirectly to the film's formation.
We get insights into the actors as well as the production team, though we get very little of how well the film did when released.
I do recall seeing the film on opening day during an evening showing, and I can't say that I was all that much impressed with the production, but it was respectable monster-fare all the same.
The book doesn't offer any earthshattering insights, but it does give us an insider's view of what it was like to be part of the company that reimagined the fifty (or forty) foot ape who ascends the skyline of the Big Apple, only to be brought down by America's finest.
If you're into experiencing the movie making experience, then this book should entertain.
Again, this is a documentary, and not really an exposition on personalities, though we do get a hint of that as well. Enjoy it for what it is.

Don't Believe Everything Bruce Has To Say

Bruce was hired by the producers of this film to write a publicity building 'how it was made' account of the remake of King Kong. And while it goes into details of the day in/day out struggles and process of filming, it provides little truth of the underlying problems that would plague the film forever. The struggle Rick Baker had with producers about the monkey suit and walking on two legs is not really addressed; nor is the horrible treatment by the film's director John Guillermin against his cast and crew. Guillermin was a monster in and of himself. His face to face shouting match with film producer Federico De Laurentiis is not covered here nor is the threat of Guillermin being fired by Dino himself once he learned about the incident. John Guillermin should have been fired! As the director, he failed to fix the films flaws and for that he is solely responsible.
King Kong had a good idea poorly executed by the expensive 40 foot mechanical Kong that never worked and the lack of convincing special effects which somehow won an Academy Award. The sole hero's of this film where Cinematographer Richard Kline & Composer John Barry.

If you were lucky enough to be a kid in December of 1976, you'll well remember the excitement of seeing KING KONG for the first time. This breezy making-of will rekindle those memories as we continue to wait for a proper version of the film on blu-ray. Fans of the movie are also encouraged to check out Ray Morton's excellent KING KONG: The Making of a Movie Icon From Fay Wray to Peter Jackson; the large section of the book dedicated to the 1976 remake offers the best, most comprehensive overview of the DeLaurentiis production.
