Fun, but small

I bought this along with the Movie Companion. The main thing that really bugged me was that it's quite small, about the size of a DVD case, only thinner, and with pretty small print. It's interesting, and explains some of the tech and creative work involved with big-budget movies, as well as behind-the-scenes glimpses and photos. The photos though are all small and none of very good quality. The Movie Companion is much bigger, more interesting, and goes into a lot more detail. Honestly, I felt like Cameras In Narnia was a cheap mini version of the Movie Companion. I ended up giving it away.

Bottom line: I probably would not recommend this to a friend.

An in-depth book worth buying...

I have enjoyed looking at this book so far, it appears to have a lot of good information for aspiring filmmakers. I would like to point out, though, that the book is quite small! I was very surprised when I opened up my package to find a book the size of a DVD case. The description Amazon gives does say that it is that size (in inches), but I never read that part - and I doubt that a whole lot of other people do either. I expected it to be big like the Illustrated Movie Companion (also a fantastic book!). So, just know ahead of time if you buy this book that it will be kind of small - but still easy to read. I would personally recommend buying it used, because $9.72 is a lot (especially when you might be able to get it for around $3). Enjoy!

Very Good book for a budding Movie-maker

This Narnia book has a lot of technical information, like how a lot of things are done in movie-making and how many lights were used in the making of the Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe. It doesn't have many interviews with the cast, but would be great for an aspiring movie-maker.

I genuinely love this book. As far as self help goes, it's very important to me that the books I check out involve tested psychology. This book is a great example of exactly that. The ACT method is new to me, but I liked the way it helped me work through issues I was stuck on or had avoided.

Grade 4-6-Austin Ives, 12, heads West in 1851 with a wagon train and writes letters to his younger brother, who remains in Pennsylvania. An orphan, Austin is traveling with the Morrison family and plans to settle on the Oregon land his father claimed before he died. The book's epistolary form makes exposition somewhat awkward and doesn't allow for much sustaining of mood. Still, the boy's voice rings true as he describes his adventures and draws the characters of the Morrisons; his friends, boaster Hiram and abused Frank; and the colorful trail cook, Reuben, who wears a coat covered with buttons from all the folks he's met in his travels. Woodruff doesn't spare the real sorrows of pioneer journeys-illness, death, lack of water, fights between travelers, and the threat of hostile Indians. Austin's final difficulties are resolved a bit too easily, but readers will enjoy the happy ending. This tale, with its occasional pencil illustrations and short chapters, would make a good classroom read-aloud.

In his letters Austin details the days with the wagon train, filled with commonplace events and predictable problems as well as hazardous escapades that keep the adrenaline pumpingaccidents, disease, death, Indian trouble, storms, and fights among the various families. He shares the friendships he makes with other youngsters and with adults. Although the adventures (both positive and negative) are similar to those in other books about wagon train travel, the epistolary format and character development offer solid reading. A clear map of the Overland Trail in 1851 begins the book, and double-page-spread pencil drawings appear throughout. Short bibliography appended. Deborah Abbott

I love this story

I love this story. I used it to teach Pioneer Days with my 3rd grade students. As a matter of fact Elvira Woodruff dedicated the book to me Susan Williams of Bangor and another teacher from Florida. That makes it very special to me.
However, I wanted the hardcover version and it wasn't available on Amazon. Is it available anywhere?

My daughter (age 10) came to appreciate this author after reading one of her books with her gifted class. When she's read it in the evenings I found myself entertained also. So, we purchased 2 other books by Elvira Woodruff, including this one, to read together.

About the Author
Niall Stokes is the founder and Editor of Hot Press, Ireland's bible of rock 'n' roll and current affairs. He has also edited two best-selling books on U2, The U2 File and U2: Three Chords And The Truth. A musician and songwriter, his band The Brothers were responsible for the highly acclaimed album Torch. A regular contributor to radio and television in Ireland and abroad, in 1993 he was appointed Chairperson of the Independent Radio and Television Commission, the semi-state regulatory body for independent broadcasting in Ireland. He wears the No. 10 shirt and plays in central midfield for Hot Press Munchengladbach 1891 in Dublin's Amateur Union League.

Stick with the old edition

U2: The Stories Behind the Song is a good book for anyone wanting to know more about U2. The book is very reasonably-priced, mainly due to its small size, compared to older editions. However, this is the fourth edition of the book, and compared to the previous edition, it is quite lacking. For starters, a lot of information from the previous edition is missing. Almost every song from Boy up to No Line on the Horizon is explained in detail, but a lot of the entries for older songs have been shortened, with less information that was previously available. I compared the two books side-by-side and noticed that some song entries had as much as entire paragraphs removed. Second, the layout is much less appealing. The previous edition was very colorful and full of photographs, while this edition is simply black text on white pages, with small photographs on some pages, and other pages entirely full of text. Third, there is not much new information in this edition that was not in the previous one. The only new information that was not available in the previous edition was information on the 11 songs from No Line on the Horizon, but each song is only explained for anywhere from one paragraph to one page. Entries for older songs take up anywhere from one to three pages.

As far as additional content goes, there is a section that covers B-sides, non-album songs, the Passengers album, and The Million Dollar Hotel film soundtrack, just like in the old edition. Like the rest of the book, a lot of these entries are much shorter than the previous edition, and there is no new material found here. The B-sides range from "Boy/Girl" (1979) to "Always" (2002), but there are no B-sides covered newer than that. "Electrical Storm", a single from the compilation album The Best of 1990-2000, was missing from the previous edition, and is not in this edition either. Other new songs missing include "The Saints Are Coming" and "Window in the Skies", both from the compilation album U218 Singles.

Basically, everything is this edition is lessened from the previous edition. There are less pictures and much less content. The book is much smaller, and even the title has been shortened. Previous editions were known as "Into the Heart: The Stories Behind Every Song", while this edition is simply titled "The Stories Behind Every Song". If you are looking for a great "coffee table-like" book about U2, I would stick with the old edition, U2: Into the Heart: The Stories Behind Every Song. If you already own the previous edition, I do not see a need to purchase the new edition, even you are a hardcore U2 fan like myself. It is currently still available on Amazon.com (and still in print, I believe), and while it is more expensive, it is definitely worth the price.

U2 Into the Heart: The Stories Behind every Song

First Negatives, then positives:

Negatives:
1. Not all of the songs have interpretations of the lyrics. Most, but not all. The stories told in each song's profile follow no formula or criteria - some cover lyrics, some music, some production, some inspiration, etc. Those stories are great and I like their inclusion, but I much prefer that every song had a lyrical explanation.

2. The author at times seems to marginalize the amount of Christian reference in U2's music. It just doesn't come up in proportion to how big it has been throughout U2's history.

3. Where is "Holy Joe" ? Other B-Sides are covered!

4. At times it's difficult to determine which points are the author's speculation and which are his conveyances of U2's thoughts and ideas. He admits in the introduction that some editorial speculation and interpretation - but I'd like some clarity about which is which, because I'm more interested in what U2 has to say than reading Stoke's brainstorming about his take.

As for the positives:

1. The book is very comprehensive (except for Holy Joe!) and very well organized - chronologically by album with a section in the back covering B-Sides, and other stuff not on albums. It gives a 2 or 3 page 'profile' on each song with several nice color pictures.

2. Despite my crticism above about not offering a lyric interpretation or explanation of every song, Stokes did a great job of finding some very interestings stories on other aspects of how songs came together.

3. And the last thing is that there don't seem to be any, or at least not many other books like this out there. I know there are others on this topic (covering U2 song by song) but the ones I've seen don't do as good of a job. In fact, the others I've seen actually make the line between editorializing and describing U2 by their own words - even more unclear. So if there are better works of this sort on U2 out there - I haven't seen them.

A Brief Anecdotal History of How U2 Wrote Their Catalog of Songs

While this certainly isn't an exhaustive insight into U2's writing process; it is still an interesting peek behind the curtain. Some songs get a lengthier treatment than others; and at times the author is more dedicated to serving his own political views than the songs he is writing about. As a document, this book stands as more of a series of captions in the U2 family photo album; as there is nary a criticism leveled at the latter career missteps of the , 'Pop' album and the weaker points of the 'No Line' album. At any rate, true U2 fans will be appreciative of Stokes' overall efforts.

About the Author
BRADFORD SCHMIDT AND BRANDON THOMPSON are founding members of GoPro’s media department. Bradford first met� GoPro founder Nicholas Woodman in 2002, on a wooden chicken ferry while on a surf trip in Sumatra. The two bonded through their love of surfing, travel, and photography. Over the next seven years, Bradford helped Nick develop what would become GoPro, testing prototype mounts and cameras and filming footage for sales, marketing, and trade shows. In 2009, Bradford moved to Half Moon Bay, California, to create GoPro’s media department and start its YouTube channel. Soon after, Brandon joined him as the second member of the media department. Since then, the two have worked together to tell countless GoPro stories; in the process, helping GoPro become the content-driven brand it is today.

Value Packed Guide - A must have

When I first saw that GoPro was coming out with a filmmaking guide book, I immediately wondered if it would be worth the $20+ Amazon had it priced at. The answer to that question is yes, absolutely.

The book is organized into a few major sections:

1. Forward, Preface, and History of GoPro:
These sections are interesting if you want to hear some of the story and inspiration for GoPro cameras. I enjoyed this section, though some people might want to skip it and head straight into the meat of the book.

2.. GoPro Primer:
This section is where you learn about the basics of using the cameras. What resolution should you use? What mode should you use? How should you adjust the camera settings for the optimum picture/video quality? All these questions and more are answered in this section. I think this is one of the most useful sections in the entire book and one worth revisiting often.

3. Mounts:
This section covers some of the basic mounts that you will want or need for getting point of views. Most of the mounts covered in this section can easily be researched just by searching on Amazon or Youtube. However, the book does include a section on experimental mounts. The experimental mount section will definitely be more useful for those who are more experienced GoPro users. This section also covers "film-maker" toys like drones and gimbals. The information is by no means extensive but because of the general layout of the book, which includes links to videos, this section could prove to be very inspirational. Lastly, there is a section that covers Multi-Camera set ups like Dual and 3D as well as array and spherical.

4. Angles by Activity:
The function of this section is to provide a quick reference guide. If you plan to use your GoPro for a lot of different activities you will especially like this section since it guides you on what mounts and corresponding camera modes are best for capturing a specific activity.

5. Capturing a Story:
This section is simply awesome. The authors tell you how to prepare to tell a story with your video. This is one of the things that makes GoPro cameras unique. You have to plan out what you want to record and how you want to tell your story. This section provides an excellent guide on how to do that. It also has a list of "essentials" that the GoPro production staff always take with them when they go out to capture a story. This list is particularly useful as a guide to what you "go bag" should eventually have.

6. Art of Editing:
Editing is what makes GoPro videos particularly awesome. If you haven't figured out by now that you will have to do some video editing to produce epic videos, let this be your memo! Editing is a huge part of the creative process. During this section they cover everything from organizing to time manipulation (slow motion, fast motion, etc.)

7. Story Analysis:
This section is all about the story. They give you examples of how GoPro uses all the tools at its disposal to tell a story. Its a theoretical section in the sense that it is breaking down videos into sections and how they contribute to the videos as a whole, what type of video it is, and examples of well made videos. It tells you how to tell a kind of story.

8. Share your world:
This section is all about inspiration. It tells you how you can share your own content, how to get access to more content, how to export your content, forums, and epic people you should be following for more inspiration.

Overall, this book provides a wealth of information in terms of the scope of what is covered. It doesn't go into great depth on any particular section, though I think that if it did, it would take away from the book. This book is meant to give you a good idea of where to start, then you just gotta get out there and try stuff. Even professionals may find this book extremely useful, if for the inspiration alone. The book is loaded with amazing pictures. Almost every single page has a QR Code/link you can follow to view a youtube video of an example of whatever it is they are talking about in that page. Its packed with visual content. Also, every picture in the book has a description of what camera settings and mount were used to capture it. The only thing I don't like about the book is that some pages don't have a page number, which can be a little annoying as you're trying to find a particular section. That is really the only complaint I have.

I plan to come back and edit this review to include additional information as I read and become more familiar with the book. It is so much information it might take a while, but at least you now have an idea of what content the book has. Definitely get this book if you're a newbie looking for inspiration and more know-how. It will make the learning curve a lot faster.

This is a nice book that reads well, is written well and looks great. The book is not what I expected or wanted. It really is a high level book focused on the concepts and theories of GoPro film making. It is not a detailed instruction manual on GoPro software or hardware. A lot of it is a historical review of GoPro. Interesting and well done but I wanted the how to nitty gritty.

This book was a gift for my son. He posts his outdoor activity videos on You Tube, (fishing, kayaking, snowboarding, mountain biking, etc.). He has been using a GoPro for quite some time. He really liked this book. It is dog-eared, and the cover is bent from use. I find it laying around the house in odd places, like he carries it around with him. When asked he said it is a good book. Coming from him is like someone else jumping up and down and screaming, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! I notice his videos look a lot more complex and sophisticated now, and believe that tips he found in this book are the reason
So, I'd say that GoPro users would find a lot of useful information in this book, though I have not personally read it myself.

Jonathan Gennick is an O'Reilly Media, Inc. editor specializing in database and programming titles. He writes extensively on database topics, and is the author of such successful books as: Oracle SQLPlus: The Definitive Guide, Oracle SQLPlus Pocket Reference, and Oracle SQLLoader: The Definitive Guide. Jonathan contributes regularly to Oracle Magazine, and frequently explores interesting SQL topics on his own website, http://gennick.com. As the title indicates... a "Pocket Guide"

"SQL Pocket Guide - 2nd Edition" is a short reference book for SQL DML (Data Manipulation Language), transaction control statements, datatypes, datatype conversion, table creation, and table modification. As the title indicates, this book is a "Pocket Guide" for the 4 major database platforms (Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, and DB2). DO NOT EXPECT this book to be a complete reference or learning guide. Like most pocket guides, only people that already know the topic will find this text most useful. I own BOTH the 1st & 2nd editions. Due to my extensive use of the 1st edition, I purchased the 2nd edition released in 2006. This is the single most used book in my library! In fact, it is never on the book shelf! It's on my desk, in my bag, and travels with me on location. I work on a variety of database platforms with the 2 biggies being MS SQL Server & Oracle. I know the language, but at times can forget the exact syntax needed for the platform I'm working with. This book provides me with an extremely efficient way to "refresh" my memory and because it covers the 4 major platforms, I'm usually covered with this ONE small book.

The layout of the 2nd edition has been reorganized alphabetically by keyword and now covers: Oracle 10g including Oracle Express Ed, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, IBM DB2 release 8.2, MySQL 5.0, and PostgreSQL 8.1. As the layout of the 2nd edition has dramatically changed since the 1st edition and is now organized alphabetically by keyword (the keyword represented on each page is listed at the bottom of the page), you can quickly find the page you're looking for by flipping through the book and looking at the bottom right corner of the page. This is MUCH MUCH easier and faster! The new edition still has a very good Index, if you can't find what you're looking for on a flip-through pass.

Also new in the 2nd ed. is an extensive listing of datatypes, datatype conversions, and syntax variation for table creation and modification. This was a complaint in other reviews specific to the 1st ed., as missing. NOT SO in the new 2nd edition! PLEASE CHECK THE DATE OF THE REVIEW YOU'RE READING to ensure it pertains to the 2nd edition.

I was so impressed with this book... I actually bought TWO copies of the 2nd edition -- one for me and one for a co-worker -- AND passed my 1st edition on to another co-worker. For those "Now, how do I write that..." moments, this book can save you HOURS! I also like seeing the different examples and sample result sets for the different platforms. If the book doesn't cover what I'm looking for, I can always go to a more extensive reference book.

Highly recommend the O'Reilly series

Quick and concise, this book never left my side for years while maintaining multiple SQL servers and their databases containing millions of records. I came in completely ignorant of what SQL was and how to use it and O'Reilly's books put me on the path to success in a new (to me) industry for YEARS. Highly recommend the O'Reilly series; They are the best.

Good reference. Not entirely version specific.

This is a good reference book. Because SQL has so many flavors, there are nuances that exist which force writers to reference them in a almost any book on the subject. Narrowing in on your paticular version is very helpful. Perhaps these would be better written for a specific audience if they were Manufacturer and Version specific and without the crosswalks.

Wouldn't you sell more books if it were version specific?
