From the Author
I've lived near the beach for close to thirty years, so it was fun to finally write about it. This book had many inspirations; every time I visit a local beach and watch the tourists in their kayaks, the barking sea lions and experience the stinky smell, I chuckle and think about my book. The theme of this book is freedom, and I wanted to explore how freedom is experienced by different characters. I've written a suspense and a romance, and this time around I wanted to combine the two. Enjoy reading!

This would be an excellent book for a high school English class

This book is deceiving in that the beginning does not tell you what the book is about. As you continue, everything starts coming together and all the plots intertwine. It is extremely interesting with lots of unexpected results. This would be an excellent book for a high school English class. There is no bad language or vulgar overtones yet it has a lot of different topics to discuss. I very much enjoyed reading this book.

Best beach read of the summer!

A page turner of a mystery taking place in a typical Southern California beach town. The plot is both gripping and believable, and the characters are well-developed and reflect typical personas found in any beach city. So realistic (I live in a beach town myself), I was sure I was going to read about a local haunt on the very next page. The best beach read of the summer!

Suspenseful Beach Read!

What a fabulous read I had this summer with The Smallest of Waves by Janice Coy! This book drove me a bit crazy, though, because I'd be at work and want to get home so I could read another chapter...... or two...........or three! The author introduced just the right number of characters so that the reader was able to follow the intertwined story lines easily, but not predictably. I want to point out that not only was this a suspenseful read, it was also educational. The author put a great deal of research into various aspects of her storyline which assisted the reader with a clear visualization of events. You can see each character (including a cute little dog), you can feel, see, smell,( while chewing your fingernails --- suspense!) and wander your way through each well-crafted chapter. Loved it!

A FASCINATING, BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Bernd Brunner is "a freelance writer who often explores the intersection of cultural history and and history of science in his writings," such as Moon: A Brief History, Bears: A Brief History, The Ocean at Home: An Illustrated History of the Aquarium, etc.

He wrote in the first chapter of this 2012 book, "Of course, trees are not normally found in houses, nor are they decorated... But the tree in this book usually has only its crown and trunk---and its place is in the home. A wholly remarkable tree, and one in need of an explanation. Although now inseparable from Christmas for us, the tree isn't found in this form in early Christianity at all. It is missing even from church songs and prayers. Something mysterious surrounds this tree that first appeared in the German cultural context, before it literally branched out... capturing the imagination of many people. This book also tells a small global story. What drove people to go off into the forest, chop down a tree, put it in their house, and decorate it in the first place? Is it really just a pagan remnant---as conventional wisdom has it---or is the history behind it more complex?" (Pg. 1-3)

He explains, "The wood wrought from trees is also found in the rituals of many cultures. It has been used for thousands of years in celebrations of the winter solstice---the so-called Yuletide---in northern Europe... it was the symbolical equivalent of the living tree. These rituals probably began as elements of a fertility myth... In time, these pre-Christian rituals came to be associated with the Christmas season, in particular the revels of Twelfth Night, on January 5, the eve of Epiphany." (Pg. 11)

He suggests, "A link can be made between the ritual of our Christmas tree and the paradise play, which had existed since the Middle Ages, even before the nativity play... Creation plays presented Adam and Eve... Also onstage, of course, was a green tree of paradise, decorated with apples and communion hosts. The paradise play, performed on Christmas Eve... begins to transcend the religious context of the play and move toward a role in the Christmas celebrations of the guilds." (Pg. 15-16)

He observes, "For a long time the Christmas tree in Germany was considered Protestant---a ... Luther tree---and the aversion of many Catholics went so far that at the end of the nineteenth century many simply called Protestantism the 'Tannenbaum religion.' ... [But] In the middle of the nineteenth century Christmas trees were already found in churches---decorated with angels, crosses, wafers, and straw stars. These last were meant to represent the Star of Bethlehem while also reminding the viewers of the straw in the manger." (Pg. 31)

He notes, "The American way of celebrating Christmas is relatively recent, evolving in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In the United States the roots of the Christmas tree reach back to the early 1800s---perhaps not as far as we might guess, given the ubiquity of German immigrants in early America. Few seem to have brought the custom along... In any case, such an icon surely would have been reviled by the Puritans, who associated evergreens with heathen superstition. In fact, even Christmas was denounced as an artificial invention without any biblical warrant." (Pg. 52) Later, he adds, "some American Christians believe to this day that the Christmas tree is a pagan and sinful custom... Some base their stance on the Book of Jeremiah, chapter 10... Defenders of the Christmas tree would argue, though, that the tree Jeremiah refers to is an idol, and the decorated Christmas tree is not. If it were, would its worshippers simply thrown it away at the end of the Christmas season? Most Christians enjoy the tree with a clear conscience." (Pg. 60-61)

He says, "some yuletide celebrants are careful to refer to the 'holiday tree' rather than the 'Christmas tree,' precisely to guard against giving offense to those who don't celebrate the Christian feast. But whatever the tree is called, the effects it unleashes...remain somewhat unpredictable... As a Christian symbol the tree inspires a quietude, reflectiveness, and joy in places where the story of Christmas is known and prized. In contrast, where the story is not part of the culture, the tree may elicit resistance, or may simply take on layers of meaning unrelated to those that Christians attribute to it." (Pg. 78-80)

He concludes, "Was the Christmas tree something consciously and deliberately 'invented'? Was someone searching for it? Probably not, but it was found nonetheless... Let us assume that the nameless inventor of the Christmas tree knew about the mythical trees of the past and the old heathen customs... the Christian paradise play... played a decisive role in the emergence of the Christmas tree... In a certain sense the evolution of the tree is but a repetition of the development of Christmas itself---a celebration that also came into the world incomplete, with roots deep in the mythologies of various Eurasian peoples, and only slowly came into its own." (Pg. 90-91)

This is an excellent study of the history of the Christmas tree and the various traditions around it, that will be of great interest to all lovers of Christmas history and lore.

Interesting Read

Nuclear airborne sex while saving the world? Yes, please!

Alec Farley defines himself by his abilities. He has been trained to control his skills in such away as to become a powerful weapon for unbeknownst to him a very corrupt father figure. He's also been led to believe many things about life that are outdated and is inexperienced in many common and social aspects of the world. After being recommended to see a psychologist, Alec is initially wary, but soon warms up to the woman trying to treat him when it becomes clear the only threat she poses is in her physical beauty. Having thought he was in control during their sessions, he underestimates her, so Alec tries seduction as his weapon of choice. In doing so, strange things begin to happen and a mission goes awry. His powers become impossibly stronger and harder to manage, but there is something about Beth that sets him off in an entirely new and extremely pleasant way.

For Beth Nakamora, helping Alec realize he has choices in life like everyone else helps him see that the Resource and, most especially his father, is using him. Her own traumatic past, won't allow her to abandon him. The problem is mutual trust and when patient/psychologist lines become blurred and eventually crossed, Beth makes a fateful decision to use force by kidnapping him. She shows Alec a different side to a world he hadn't known existed or experienced outside of books and the Resource. When it becomes apparent to both of them that his father has kept him in the dark for much of his life, Alec decides to take matters into his own hands - literally.

The story has sort of a supernatural X-Men feel to it and by the end, you'll definitely see why. Unfortunately, while the premise was good, some of the execution felt a bit lacking. There were some awkward scene changes or dialogue that didn't seem to flow naturally. Getting into the story and forming connections with the characters took some work as the story and their relationship development is fairly fast-paced.

Alec is and is not a na�ve hero. He is extreme on both sides as displayed by never having been to a Wal-Mart and takes a new interest to Motown music and learns to drive. Throughout the story, he shows an adorable innocence and enthusiasm for learning what would be considered social norms. However, the opposite extreme in his na�vet� is displayed with his visits to strip clubs and his training to take on missions deemed too dangerous for regular civilian soldiers. Somewhat of the same can be said about Beth. While she may be extremely intelligent and retains a do-gooder fearless streak, she plays the victim card a bit too much for my taste. However, her determination is a valued redeeming quality.

Regardless to some of the pitfalls of the story, I was very attracted to the continued stream of action sequences that never let the story flatline. That action includes some really out of this world sex scenes that were enjoyably imagined. The graphic description may not have all been there, but Ms. Lawson definitely provides some unique sense exploratory ones. Some of the secondary characters as well were a welcome addition and occasional distraction.

I believe the series deserves further exploration and will be keeping an eye out for when the next is released. Readers looking for an adventure into a paranormally complex and political world with a quite literally hot hero, will want to check this out.

Alec Farley is a young man with special abilities -- he can move things with his mind, or create fires with a wave of his hand. He's been raised from childhood by a shadowy paramilitary organization to become the perfect soldier. Therapist Beth Nakamora is brought in, ostensibly to help Alec with his anger management issues. But she has her own agenda: to help Alec escape, whether he wants to or not. Soon the two of them are on the run, and they have to learn to trust each other as they try to evade Alec's handlers, as well as cope with a terrorist plot against New York City. The relationship between Alec and Beth is nuanced and complicated. The reader has little doubt that they're meant to be together, but the complications (internal and external) that get in the way are plausible and they both remain sympathetic, even when they're at odds. Alec's powers lead to some pretty spectacular action scenes (and "action" scenes, if you know what I mean...). This book is a real page-turner, and I enjoyed it a lot.

A handsome hero. A beautiful (and courageous) woman. A great villain. A mysterious mentor. Throw in some intrigue, explosions and a car chase and you have a great book!
Corrina Lawson, intrepid Geek Mom and blogger, uses her story-telling skills to craft a well-balanced and fun read. (Okay, she doesn't have a car chase, but there IS a car scene.)

About the Author
Jerry Scutts has worked in the field of aviation publishing since the late 1960s, writing over 40 books that have covered a broad spectrum of subject matter ranging from US Navy floatplane fighters in World War 2 to the exploits of the USAF's Phantom IIs over Vietnam. His specialist areas are the Luftwaffe and the US Army Air Forces in World War 2, and he originally appeared on the Osprey list as long ago as 1977, when he wrote the second volume in the now much sought after Air Cam Air War series –- many of the jacket illustrations in this series were also painted by him. Jerry has been a regular contributor to Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series since its inception in 1994.

GOOD START FOR THIS SERIES

This series began well with this book by Jerry Scutts. It is really difficult to cover in one short volume all the aces that flew P-51 with the Eight air Force in WW II, and Scutts tried to give the reader a general view of their tasks and accomplishments. THe appendix at the end is very valuable. Good work.
