Jonathan Gennick is an O'Reilly Media, Inc. editor specializing in database and programming titles. As the title indicates... a "Pocket Guide"

"SQL Pocket Guide - 2nd Edition" is a short reference book for SQL DML (Data Manipulation Language), transaction control statements, datatypes, datatype conversion, table creation, and table modification. As the title indicates, this book is a "Pocket Guide" for the 4 major database platforms (Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, and DB2). DO NOT EXPECT this book to be a complete reference or learning guide. Like most pocket guides, only people that already know the topic will find this text most useful. I own BOTH the 1st & 2nd editions. Due to my extensive use of the 1st edition, I purchased the 2nd edition released in 2006. This is the single most used book in my library! In fact, it is never on the book shelf! It's on my desk, in my bag, and travels with me on location. I work on a variety of database platforms with the 2 biggies being MS SQL Server & Oracle. I know the language, but at times can forget the exact syntax needed for the platform I'm working with. This book provides me with an extremely efficient way to "refresh" my memory and because it covers the 4 major platforms, I'm usually covered with this ONE small book.

The layout of the 2nd edition has been reorganized alphabetically by keyword and now covers: Oracle 10g including Oracle Express Ed, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, IBM DB2 release 8.2, MySQL 5.0, and PostgreSQL 8.1. As the layout of the 2nd edition has dramatically changed since the 1st edition and is now organized alphabetically by keyword (the keyword represented on each page is listed at the bottom of the page), you can quickly find the page you're looking for by flipping through the book and looking at the bottom right corner of the page. This is MUCH MUCH easier and faster! The new edition still has a very good Index, if you can't find what you're looking for on a flip-through pass.

Also new in the 2nd ed. is an extensive listing of datatypes, datatype conversions, and syntax variation for table creation and modification. This was a complaint in other reviews specific to the 1st ed., as missing. NOT SO in the new 2nd edition! PLEASE CHECK THE DATE OF THE REVIEW YOU'RE READING to ensure it pertains to the 2nd edition.

I was so impressed with this book... I actually bought TWO copies of the 2nd edition -- one for me and one for a co-worker -- AND passed my 1st edition on to another co-worker. For those "Now, how do I write that..." moments, this book can save you HOURS! I also like seeing the different examples and sample result sets for the different platforms. If the book doesn't cover what I'm looking for, I can always go to a more extensive reference book.

Highly recommend the O'Reilly series

Quick and concise, this book never left my side for years while maintaining multiple SQL servers and their databases containing millions of records. I came in completely ignorant of what SQL was and how to use it and O'Reilly's books put me on the path to success in a new (to me) industry for YEARS. Highly recommend the O'Reilly series; They are the best.

Good reference. Not entirely version specific.

This is a good reference book. Because SQL has so many flavors, there are nuances that exist which force writers to reference them in a almost any book on the subject. Narrowing in on your paticular version is very helpful. Perhaps these would be better written for a specific audience if they were Manufacturer and Version specific and without the crosswalks.

Wouldn't you sell more books if it were version specific?

I have read many self development books yet it was this book that made me finally understand how simple it really is. There are distinct Laws of the Universe that when acknowledged and applied correctly will bring you everything that is yours by Divine Right.

As a society in general, we have been led to believe that life is much more difficult than it really is. Success in all areas of your Life is not hard to attain at all-- that is of course, if you know the game and how to play it!

Read this book and change the way you look at yourself and more importantly how you look at every situation. Remember - it's not the situation- it's how you look at the situation that shapes your destiny.

I can not stress enough the positive impact that you will see happen in your life and the people's lives around you when you read this book and apply the principles and affirmations. You will begin to see all your dreams start to come true right before your eyes and you'll find yourself saying, "I can't believe it was that simple..."

Wise and Way Ahead of Her Time...

Though not a large book, this is a very worthwhile read and easily digested in bites. So if you only have small bits of time to sit and read, you won't get lost with this one.

In rebuttal of previous negative reviews, part of my background and education is a degree in Theology, and further studies into world religions and ancient texts. As someone who understands extensive biblical study - and I mean cross referencing original greek, aramaic and hebrew texts, as well as many, many authors and researchers works, writing theses and all the other such efforts required in such education and credentials, I still find this book compelling.

It was not the easiest read for me initially as Florence speaks in terms of things that I had never, at the time, really heard much of before. It was a new kind of thinking for me. The only reason why I was reading the book was because an 80+ year old lady recommended it to me and asked me to.

I found myself challenged in thought/perception, moral philosophy and interpretation by a book written in 1925! And unlike anything I had read up until that time. There were times I was very frustrated by what I read. Yet, in the end, I not only could not argue with her assertions and interpretations, I found truth and peace in them. The experience catalytically changed my perspective, opened my world and even improved my life in doing so. Today, there is no other book in my collection (of multiple bookcases of various sources) with more permanently housed bookmarks and notations. I could not now recommend a book more highly than this one for self-improvement. It is very positively written with hope and love. Remember that the creation of reality begins with the foundation of thought. Florence teaches according to this principle and touches on elements that can also be found in science and quantum physics, another study I highly recommend.

If you're reading this because you're at a point of seeking in your life, it's a pretty unassuming, economical little book and well worth the return.

read this book and have everything you want

I came acroos this book by accident, I bought it with several others and it stayed on by bookshelf for a long time, a time in which I was miserable and just didn't see any way out. Then one day I ran across it, I began reading it in bed, figuring I would be through it that night since it was less than 100 pages. Boy was I wrong. I began repeating the passages and it was like a burden was lifted off of my shoulders, I cried like I was finally free of all of the negative things in my life and that I was finaly going to get everything I wanted, even if it was not mine by devine right. This book will enlighten you and show you that everything that you want may just make you miserable and you'll regret it if you don't ask for things that really belong to you. How did this book change my life? After being single for a long time and dating all the wrong men, I met the man who was mine by divine right. I studied this book nightly before we met, I was even dating a Doctor and then I met my husband and knew that he was the one. And the wierd part was he had just moved from Cocoa Beach Florida, and I lived near Chicago, and we met in the middle of winter. He told me he quit his job and moved up here because he knew there was a reason. The reason was to find me. So when I concentrate and know that I can have it all, it comes true with amazing accuracy. It's true, life is a game and you need this "game manual" to show you how it's played.

A Damsel who rescues Her Prince Charming

I enjoyed this book a lot it was definitely different from Sharon Kendrick's garden variety damsels in distress without a clue and their unequally yoked heroes, it has the traditional Harlequin plot of pretty working girl meets her prince charming/in love with the boss plot; however there was a bit of a departure from the norm, from the beginning I liked Carly; she wasn't your standard clueless heroine willing and waiting to be rescued, she actually had a working plan to be her own savior; she was Luis's housekeeper but it was a means to a better ending.

Luis Martinez, is a retired racecar driver who was injured during a charity race and finds himself stuck at his estate in England recuperating from the accident, like any respectable wealthy hunk he suffers from the affliction of having any woman in breathing distance, fall in love with him. His most recent victim happens to be his physical therapist who is helping him with his rehab, who can't contain herself around him long enough to complete her job, trained professional that she is, all professionalism deserts her, and all she is capable of doing around Luis is making cow eyes at him; Luis in his infinite wisdom and experience recognizes the signs, sacks her and then demands that his housekeeper and general dogs body Carly take over the duties of his rehabber.

I don't want to give away the story itself, however I will say that I liked both Carly and Luis, the former because even though she wasn't as worldly as Luis in many ways she never took his crap and stood up to him, throughout the story she always maintained her independence and strength. Luis was a little unbearable at times, however he was likable because he was up front and said what needed to be said even when it didn't put him in the best light.

I really enjoyed this book because the characters were equally matched and the storyline was believable without being overbearing to any extreme. I would recommend this book as a quick read and a few hours of escape. Happy Reading!!!!

Real heroine in this story. Loved her.

I really liked the heroine in this story. Even though this plot was the typical cliche, the h was not typical. She has curves first of all.......and she has guts and a backbone. She really stands for something, and doesn't get so wishy washy because of her love for the hero. In fact, she draws on her inner strength and is very strong internally. I really liked the part where she brazens it out and tells him how much she loves him, even though she knows that he will not receive her love kindly....... but she wants him to know before she fully moves on......it was an emotionally moving story for readers that are more into the emotional aspect of a story. A story where real emotions are revealed, where someone takes a chance on love, even though it seems impossible ..........aaaahhhhhh I would maybe give it a four but the truth is I haven't read a nice book like this in a long time so I gave it five stars.......

Good Character Development

Luis Martinez is recuperating in his mansion after crashing in a charity race. Tired of the endless fussing, he fires his nursing staff and recruits his housekeeper, Carly Connor, to aid in his physical therapy. Luis is surprised to find himself becoming attracted to her stubborn personality and plain, unfashionable appearance. He offers to become her lover and show her every sensual pleasure but only if she promises not to fall in love with him.

The Housekeeper's Awakening is a romance story from Harlequin Presents. In the beginning, Carly tolerates Luis' playboy antics because her only goal is to save up money for medical school and provide a better future for herself. She's used to fading into the background but when she becomes Luis' lover she realizes that she also has to look and act the part. It forces her to deal with old insecurities and the more time she spends with Luis the more she realizes she can't stop herself from falling in love with him.

It's not the most remarkable story but I thought it was a decent read. I liked both of the main characters and found them more endearing after learning their full backstories. Their pasts were dramatic and dark. It was interesting seeing how it shaped the person they became and how it still affected their beliefs. Character development was given more focus throughout the story which invested me as a reader but also seemed to give the story a slower pace.

The romance also had an peculiar understated feel to it. I almost expected them not to get together in the end and I would have oddly been okay with that because it fit with their characterization. The ending felt a bit forced but the epilogue more than made up for it.

Digital code is butt load of bull****!!!

Great book with great quality pages. I have not started playing the game yet because I actually bought the guide so I can get both digital and physical versions of this guide, but the reason why I only gave 4 stars is because the digital code to get access to the digital versions for free is a butt load of bull****! You only get "access" to the digital guide through prima's website. There isn't even an app to gain access to the guide. Its retarded how they're doing things now. When I bought my FFX & FFX-2 guidebook last year (May 2015), I also bought the digital version and I was able to download it in a pdf file format, which was great at the time. If they want to prevent free content from getting generated everywhere, then they should at least publish the books through Amazon's kindle app, or even through the iTunes store. Their online website is hard to navigate and how they're presenting the book is so not like the book at all! Don't buy the "online access", just go with this book, or go to gamefaqs for free guides. At least gamefaqs are better presented and only on one page.

Grade 2-4–McCartney joins the ranks of celebrity authors with his first childrens book. Wirral the squirrel sets off to find Animalia, a tropical animal sanctuary. He knows of it from his mother, who is crushed to death when bulldozers begin mowing down the Woodland. With her dying breath, she urges him to find the fabled island. His quest takes him to Megatropolis, a loud, polluted city, where he sees animals imprisoned in factories and learns of a plot to destroy Animalia. With the help of his friends Froggo and Wilhamina, Wirral finds the island and leads the animals of the Woodland and Megatropolis to a happy, if predictable, end. Ardaghs writing style and humor are evident, although some of the jokes fall flat. The cartoon illustrations resemble animation cels reduced to fit the books pages, with the result that occasionally Wirral and his friends become lost in the surrounding scenery. Paul McCartney's lifelong interest in children's storytelling grew out of his love of classic Disney. He has created a number of award-winning animated films in collaboration with Geoff Dunbar, including Tuesday, based on the book by David Wiesner, and Tropic Island Hum, which features characters from this book.

Delightful.

It's not going to be made into a movie anytime soon...nor do I think it will spurn a "tele" series. But I do hope Sir Paul keeps writing both songs and books.

My seven year old daughter and I purchased the book yesterday. We read it last night.

I worried since it is a picture book it might be too young for her...

Sorry Paul, I underestimated your power. She was enthralled.

The book is a great adventure...within a few pages we were drawn into it... almost immediately after meeting Wirral, the main character... he is thrust into the adult world by the sudden loss of a loved one. Wirral trying to fulfill the last wishes of his dead loved one begins a journey to find the magical world Animalia that he has been told exists only in fairy tales until his loved one tells him on her deathbed... Animalia is real!

Around the world he goes...squirrel on the run, meeting friends and discovering the world... running up trees and saving girls...protecting the planet...one small squirrel step at a time.

The drawings are wonderful and sweet.

It is Paul McCartney after all.

What else would one expect from one who constantly may be amazes me!

a beautiful book for grandparents

As a grandmother of thirteen I bought this book to read to some of them. the two four year old boys loved it so much they begged for their own copies, and being grandma I bought it for them. I couldn't bear to give up my own copy!!!!
